Five recent Hinsdale Central School graduates were awarded scholarships from funds stewarded by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Amaya Russell, Brett Bergstrom and Robert Childs were awarded the Hinsdale Alumni Association Memorial Scholarship for $2,000.
This scholarship, established by the Hinsdale Alumni Association, is for graduating seniors of Hinsdale Central School. Recipients must have a GPA of 80% or higher, demonstrate qualities of good citizenship and good character and have definite educational goals.
Russell plans to study neuroscience at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Bergstrom plans to study business administration at St. Bonaventure University.
Childs also received the Laurie Anzivine Memorial Scholarship for $500.
A scholarship program of the Pink Pumpkin Project, this fund supports annual scholarship awards for graduating students of a Cattaraugus County high school or high school in the surrounding area who have had an immediate family member or guardian go through cancer treatment.
Applicants must also submit an essay explaining what they learned from their family member or guardian who struggled with cancer and the impact it left on them and what advice they would give to someone else who may face the same situation.
Childs plans to study accounting at St. Bonaventure University.
Alli Greenawalt received the Elodine Swarts Baxter and Lena Conrad Swarts Memorial Scholarship for $1,500.
This scholarship, established in 2016, is for a promising and deserving graduating senior from Hinsdale Central School or a resident of Ischua, NY, regardless of what high school the student attends. The student must demonstrate academic success and involvement in extracurricular activities.
Norman Baxter, a past Hinsdale graduate, established the scholarship fund in memory of his mother, Elodine Swarts Baxter, and his grandmother, Lena Conrad Swarts.
Greenawalt plans to study criminal justice at Jamestown Community College.
Alexander Dove received the Betty Pappas Scholarship for $1,000.
The Betty Pappas Scholarship, established through the estate of Betty Pappas, a former Hinsdale teacher and guidance is counselor, is awarded to a student in the graduating class at Hinsdale Central School who will be attending a college or university and has given outstanding service to Hinsdale Central School.
Dove plans to study business administration at Jamestown Community College.
