Seven recent graduates recently received scholarship awards celebrating students in the arts from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Jabreyah Brown of Olean and Myra Sprout of Portville received the Carroll Swanson Memorial Scholarship for the Performing Arts for $300.
The Carroll Swanson Memorial Scholarship for the Performing Arts, established at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation through a bequest from Ms. Swanson’s estate, continues Swanson’s love for supporting music and students by providing scholarships for students at Allegany-Limestone, Olean or Portville who have participated in a music program.
Brown plans to study radiologic technology at Alfred State College. Sprout plans to study criminal justice at Jamestown Community College.
Braelyn Eaton and Acacia Steffenhagen, both of Olean, received the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship for the Arts for $1,500. Lainey Dunlap of Franklinville and Leah Olejniczak of Randolph received the award for $500.
This scholarship was established in 2016 by the friends and family of Elisa B. Hughey, a deep lover of the arts and education, after she lost a long battle with cancer. In 2019, the Hughey Scholarship Committee moved the fund under the management of CRCF. This fund provides annual scholarships for college-bound students committed to advancing their skills in any aspect of the fine arts (including sculpture, painting, drawing, watercolor, graphics, animation, architecture/design and photography).
Eaton plans to attend SUNY Geneseo to study English literature. Steffenhagen plans to attend SUNY Fredonia to study animation and illustration. Dunlap plans to attend Houghton University to study bible and theology. Olejniczak plans to attend SUNY Plattsburgh to study medical technology.
Aubree Hund of Olean received the Alyn J. Heim Music Scholarship for $2,500.
The Heim Scholarship is for a graduating Cattaraugus County student majoring in music. The recipient must demonstrate academic success, as well. Paul DeRitter, Mr. Heim’s former student at Manchester Regional High School in Haledon, NJ, and a musician and music educator himself, established the scholarship to honor his former teacher. Mr. DeRitter taught elementary general music and instrumental music for 33 years in Franklinville.
Hund plans to attend Jamestown Community College to study English and music.
