Five recent Olean High School graduates have been awarded scholarships from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Samuel Morgan received the JoAnn Wehmeyer English Scholarship.
The JoAnn Wehmeyer English Scholarship, established by a group of Olean High alumni in memory of Mrs. Wehmeyer who taught English at Olean High School for 42 years, is an award for a graduating senior recommended by the Olean English faculty and who has excellent writing skills and the ability to make a difference.
This award will initially pay out $2,500, followed by a subsequent payment of $1,000 in fall 2027.
Morgan plans to attend Ohio University to study astrophysics.
Grady Smucinski received the Louis A. “Louie” and Patricia Magnano Scholarship for $1,000.
This scholarship fund, established through the generosity of Park Centre Development and Louis and Patricia’s daughter, Gloria, supports an annual scholarship for graduating students of Olean High School who are in good academic standing and plan to pursue an education in a business-related field of study at any 2- or 4-year institution.
Smucinski plans to attend St. Bonaventure University to study finance.
Leah Richardson received the Louis L. Marra Scholarship for $1,000.
The Louis L. Marra Scholarship, established in memory of Louis L. Marra, will provide a scholarship award for graduating seniors of Olean High School who have held a job during their high school career and demonstrate financial need and academic success.
Richardson plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to study pre-optometry.
Anna Bates and Domonick Hirliman received the Tyler Bihler Memorial Scholarship for $1,200 each.
The Tyler Bihler Memorial Scholarship is given to one male and one female Olean High School student who have maintained a GPA over 80 and demonstrated good character and citizenship attending a 2- or 4-year college. Tyler Bihler’s family established the scholarship in Tyler’s memory.
Bates plans to attend John Carroll University to study exercise science. Hirliman plans to attend SUNY Brockport to study physical education.
