Olean grads receive Hull VMD, other CRCF scholarships

Six Olean graduates recently received scholarships from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Tatiana Warmley received the Robert E. Hull VMD Memorial Scholarship for $2,800 and the James A. and Joan E. Maguire Family Scholarship for $1,000.

Established in memory of Robert Hull, an Olean native who went on to a long, successful career in veterinary medicine in Pittsburgh, PA, this scholarship is for students who demonstrate a financial need, academic success (minimum GPA 3.0 or better), and who intend to pursue a degree at a 2- or 4-year college in a field of the sciences, but other majors may be considered. Preference is given first to minorities graduating from Olean High School (Dr. Hull’s alma mater) and if no applicants meet that criteria, the second preference is for girls graduating from Olean High School. Second preference is for students graduating from any high school in Cattaraugus County meeting the above criteria.

The James A. and Joan E. Maguire Family Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to students graduating from Olean, Allegany-Limestone, Belfast Central High School or Southern Tier Catholic School. Preference is for a hard-working student who shows potential and perseverance. Special consideration will be given to students who have faced a learning challenge.

Warmley plans to study psychology at the University at Buffalo.

Molly DeRose received the JoAnn Wehmeyer English Scholarship for $2,500 and the Good Samaritan Award for $500.

The JoAnn Wehmeyer English Scholarship, established by a group of Olean High alumni in memory of Mrs. Wehmeyer who taught English at Olean High School for 42 years, is an award for a graduating senior recommended by the Olean English faculty and who has excellent writing skills and the ability to make a difference.

The Good Samaritan Award, established by Pierre Eade, an Olean High School educational wall-of-famer and founder of the Olean Homeless Huskies, is awarded to an Olean High School graduate who demonstrates and models exceptional qualities of care, compassion and concern for fellow students and community. The recipient must have participated in one or more Homeless Huskie Night events during his/her tenure at OHS. Community service and active roles in leadership will also be taken into consideration.

DeRose plans to study business and communications at Syracuse University.

Annalisse Easton received the William D. and Catherine Griffin Fraser Scholarship, a $2,000 award.

This scholarship is for a graduate of any Cattaraugus or Allegany County High School pursuing a post-secondary education, with preference for a graduate of Olean High School or Cuba-Rushford Central School pursuing a degree in the medical or education field.

Easton plans to study early childhood education at St. Bonaventure University.

Michael Bader received the Louis A. “Louie” and Patricia Magnano Scholarship for $1,000.

This scholarship fund, established through the generosity of Park Centre Development and Louis and Patricia’s daughter, Gloria, supports an annual scholarship for graduating students of Olean High School who are in good academic standing and plan to pursue an education in a business-related field of study at any 2- or 4-year institution.

Bader plans to study finance at SUNY Geneseo.

Brennan Kielar received the Marjorie and Robert Schaumleffel Rotary Scholarship for $1,000.

This scholarship, in memory of Robert and Marjorie Schaumleffel, is for a graduating senior of Olean, Portville, Southern Tier Catholic School or Allegany-Limestone who is an active member of the Rotary Interact Club who writes an outstanding essay on the meaning of the Rotary saying “service above self.”

Kielar plans to study criminal justice at SUNY Brockport.

Thomas Kielar was awarded the Don and Bern Holcomb Memorial Scholarship for $500.

This scholarship, established in memory of Don and Bern Holcomb, is for high school students from any school in Cattaraugus or Allegany counties who plans to attend an accredited post-secondary institution with a preference for a student majoring in an agricultural or conservation-related field or a female pursuing an engineering degree.

Kielar plans to study environmental science at SUNY Plattsburgh.
