Nine Allegany-Limestone Central School and Oswayo Valley Central School graduates were recently awarded memorial scholarships from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Addie Fisher and Tatymn Lindell received the Nicolas G. Pendl Memorial Scholarship for $2,000, while Stephanie Kopec and Haylee Voorhees were awarded $1,000.

The scholarship is for a graduating senior from Allegany-Limestone Central School in good academic standing who intends to pursue a 2- or 4-year degree in environmental science or other science-related field. The scholarship, in memory of Nicolas G. Pendl, a 2013 Allegany-Limestone Central School graduate, was established by Peter, Mary and Bethany Pendl; the Pendl and Potter families; the Allegany Engine Company; and friends of Nicolas.

Fisher plans to study psychology at Houghton College. Lindell plans to study biology at John Carroll University. Kopec plans to study biology on a pre-health track at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Voorhees and Maddax King, along with Oswayo Valley’s Chloe Metcalf, were awarded the Christine Conner Memorial Scholarship for $500.

Christine Conner was a 1984 graduate of Oswayo Valley Central School and school counselor at Allegany-Limestone Middle School. This scholarship carries on her support of education and children by supporting annual scholarships with preference for students furthering their education in criminal justice or the EMT field and for students pursuing a degree in nursing or the mental health field.

Voorhees plans to study human services at Hilbert College. King plans to study history at Alfred University. Metcalf plans to study nursing at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

Caleb Strade received the Dennis Jones and Wayne Johnston Memorial Dice Run Scholarship.

The $500 scholarship is for a graduating senior from either Olean High School or Allegany-Limestone Central School who will be attending a 4-year college, with preference for a student planning to study business or a business-related field (i.e. accounting, finance, marketing, economics, etc.)

Strade plans to study business management at Keuka College.

Avery McCoy received the first-ever Tommy Moran Memorial Scholarship for $1,000.

Established in memory of Tommy Moran, a 2018 graduate of Allegany-Limestone Central School, by his family, the scholarship will go to a student who demonstrates financial need and intends to pursue a major in a trade/technical-related field of study or who plans to attend Alfred State College or any other trade/technical school; and/or has participated in athletics and demonstrated leadership in athletics during his/her high school career.

McCoy plans to study welding and metal fabrication at Alfred State College.

Brady Straub of ALCS received the Laurie Anzivine Memorial Scholarship for $500.

A scholarship program of the Pink Pumpkin Project, this fund supports an annual scholarship award for graduating students of a Cattaraugus County high school or high school in the surrounding area who have had an immediate family member or guardian go through cancer treatment.

Applicants must also submit an essay explaining what they learned from their family member or guardian who struggled with cancer and the impact it left on them and what advice they would give to someone else who may face the same situation.

Straub plans to study business administration law at Western Carolina University.
